　　1943年，日本人民饱受战乱之苦。在一次空袭避难中，田岛三郎和小野萤子相识了，两颗纯洁的心因此紧紧地连在了一起。三郎的父亲是一个冷酷的法官，母亲早已去世，大哥一郎战死，已经怀孕的大嫂正在家里战战兢地过日子，二哥三哥哥是陆军中尉。萤子和母亲生活在一起，她是美术学校的学生， 母亲在工厂里干活，为补贴家用，萤子经常到街头去为人们画像，母女的生活虽然清贫但很快乐。自从认识萤子以来，三郎整日陶醉在幸福的感觉中。然而不久，三郎就接到了应征入伍的通知单，为了等三郎，在空袭中萤子没有及时躲避，结果中弹身亡。三郎不知道萤子已死，他怀着对萤子的美好回忆和战后重逢的信念，登上了军用列车。战争结束了，三郎战死异乡，回到日本的只有一封封的信，和萤子为他画的那幅肖像相伴。
此片拍摄于日本战后第五年，它的问世受到了进步派和艺术派的一致好评。该片是水木洋子根据法国著名作家罗曼·罗兰...
